Long-term freshwater chemistry monitoring of the glaciarized Ariedalen catchment, 2014-2024

The data presented originate from the hydrochemical monitoring of the Ariebekken stream water. The monitoring regime for the Ariebekken stream was maintained from 2013 to 2024, focusing exclusively on the summer ablation periods. The Ariebekken catchment is a small, partly glaciated drainage basin, covering an area of approximately 2.03 km2. The source glacier, Ariebreen, is a cold-based, retreating glacier. Glacierized coverage accounts for no more than 12 % of the total Ariebekken drainage basin area.

Water samples were collected in-situ using an automated sampler. In the hydrochemical laboratory at the Polish Polar Station Hornsund, the samples underwent immediate analysis for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and alkalinity. Subsequently, a sub-sample was filtered through a 0.45 µm MCE MF-Millipore membrane filter and analyzed for its dissolved major ion composition using ion chromatography (IC).

These data contribute to the long-term environmental monitoring scheme for the natural environment of Southern Spitsbergen, which is continuously maintained by the Polish Polar Station Hornsund.
